The History of Generations Home Care, Inc.
Generations Home Care, Inc. (formerly Geriatric Services of Delaware,
Inc.) began in 1961 as Presbyterian Social Services, founded by the New
Castle Presbytery as a ministry to inner city inhabitants of Wilmington.
One component of that ministry, aide services to the aging, was incorporated
in 1968 as Generations Home Care, Inc.
The Agency grew rapidly. Within the first year, Meals On Wheels and Adult
Foster Care were added to the program services. Meals On Wheels had been
organized by the Wilmington Council of Churches in 1964. The Agency also
expanded geographically, first into Sussex County, and then into Kent
County through a merger with two other agencies. During these first years,
Generations managed the Beach House, a program to provide a seaside vacation
for older people.
In 1972, Generations Home Care initiatied its own formal, professional
training of aides. At the same time, Generations assumed the responsibility
for billing clients for services. It then became necessary to find resources
to help lower-income, older people pay for needed services. Public and
private funding sources now enable us to assist those clients with their
home care needs.
In 1988, a volunteer transportation service originated in New Castle
County through a state funded program. This program expanded into the
Medical Transportation Program in 1995 and by 1999, all three counties
were providing transportation to medical appointments.
With the additional revenue from public and private funding, Generations
Home Care, Inc. has grown geographically and added new services, reaching
an ever increasing number of residents throughout the state.
As a home health care agency, we provide skilled services in the home
- nursing, therapies, and social services - to the aging and disabled
recovering from surgery or illness. Respite Care is increasingly important.
Counseling and referral complete our range of services. Today, as in 1968,
the staff of Generations Home Care recognizes the importance of recuperating
in one's home with the support of family memers and friends. We are committed
to providing the highest level of quality care so that our clients can
achieve better health and independence in the familiar and comfortable
setting of their own homes.
